The Hatchet Lake Lodge Experience
The all encompassing experience that you will find yourself in while visiting Hatchet Lake Lodge. An experience like no other. Arriving at our private 6000 foot long airstrip, rising from the immense landscape of beautiful blue rivers and streams connecting to larger lakes and miles of endless green forest growing over top the solid rock that is the Canadian Shield. Then meeting our experienced guides as they shuttle you and the rest of your party to the lodge, a short boat ride away. As you come around the point, you see the main dock with the hand built log style lodge behind it, along with the lake front log cabins. You have just arrived in a truly remote location.
Over the past 57 years, George Fleming and now Harvey Kroll, along with countless others along the way, have developed this isolated island into a community. A community that is completely self sustained, with generator and solar power, fresh running hot and cold water to every single cabin, and a proper waste system. There is no better place to get away from the hectic city but still have all the amenities we have become so used to having.
Over the next four days you will fish a lake that has no other lodge, commercial fishery, or public access on it. The only other fishermen and women you will come across are those that arrived on the same airplane as you did. To those that want to explore even more, we have three portage lakes that are accessible by a short walk where once you have arrived you will find additional boats waiting. Beyond Hatchet Lake and our three portage lakes, we also sell daily flyout adventures to other lakes. This is an incredible experience in itself. To be able to get on a float plane in the morning, fish a lake that is even more secluded than Hatchet, and return to the lodge for supper in the same day is an unbelievable experience!
At Hatchet Lake Lodge we offer some of the best fresh water fishing in the world. Our guests target Northern Pike, Lake Trout, Walleye, and Arctic Grayling. Northern Pike, a heavily sought after fish in Canada's North, are so popular due to their heavy striking and line peeling action. Our lakes are known to be home to giant Northern Pike as we see our guests catching countless trophies each and every day! Lake Trout are another staple fish in Northern Canada. These monstrous fish tend to follow the cold water. Whether you hook into one of these beasts in the shallow early season water or at deeper depths later in the summer, you are guaranteed to experience the fight of a lifetime! Located at the northern tip of where the Walleye swim we offer excellent Walleye fishing, both quality and quantity! Lastly, the sailfish of the North ... Known for their aggressive bite and hard fought battles the Arctic Grayling makes for a spectacular catch on the fly rod or light spinning tackle. These fish can be found in the fast moving waters of the Corson Rapids located on the west side of Hatchet Lake.
During your days on the lake you will discover a new addiction on top of the fishing ... Our famous and delicious shore lunches. Prepared freshly using the mornings catch, your guide will cook lunch for you and your group over the campfire at a spot on the lake. Our exceptional guides can prepare this lunch a number of different ways, so make sure to ask your guide!
Meals in the lodge are just as fantastic as the shore lunches. Our two chefs prepare all sorts of dishes and desserts along with fresh baked breads and garden salads grown right on the island. Two guest favourites are our full turkey dinners served with all of the fixings or the last night steak night where we prepare a 16 or 8 oz New York strip steak cooked perfectly to your liking. All meals and drinks in the lodge and lounge are served to you by our friendly waitresses.
The Hatchet Lake Lodge Experience would not be complete without our industry known, best customer service! We invite you to ask anyone that has ever visited the lodge. From our waitresses to our dock-staff and everyone else in between, our staff works tirelessly to ensure that you are completely satisfied with your stay at the lodge.
We have always referred to our trips as being a "Once in a lifetime opportunity" but the truth is majority of our guests return year after year to experience the Hatchet Lake Lodge Difference. Each trip to the lodge is unique in its own way. We have begun to outline the different, more specific, experiences you may encounter while staying at the lodge below. We hope you enjoy!

The Grand Slam
Similar to the grand slam in baseball, when a player hits a home run with the bases loaded, thus scoring four points. The Grand Slam at Hatchet Lake Lodge is achieved once you have a caught a fish from each of the four main species found in our vast waters. These species are: Northern Pike, Lake Trout, Walleye, and Arctic Grayling. The beauty of Hatchet Lake itself is that this can be achieved on Hatchet Lake alone. Or if you prefer you can attempt the Grand Slam while fishing our many flyout lake destinations during your stay at the lodge.
Chasing the Silver pike
The Silver Phase Northern Pike seems to be a genetic anomaly, as its colour does not resemble that of a normal Northern Pike. Durrant Lake, a flyout destination from Hatchet Lake Lodge, is the only lake within our repertoire in which we have found these rare fish. We cannot guarantee a success in catching this exciting fish but we can point you in the right direction!
Exploring Sandy Island
Hatchet Lake Lodge is located on Sandy Island, on Hatchet Lake. The island is home to many walking trails that our guests are free to explore. A great hike to do is taking the trail that leads to the front point. Along the walk you will see the eagle's nest that has been home to two eagles in recent years. Sometimes if you are lucky you will be able to spot a baby eagle in the nest. The same trail can be followed to the north point where you will be able to see the backside of the island. Along these trails you will find various rest points where you can take a seat and enjoy the view!
